My Music Collection – Albums Beginning With A

The Wowbagger Music Project is a futile attempt to listen to all of the music I’ve ever wanted to listen to. Find out more here

I thought I’d start this ridiculous project by listening to all the music already in my digital collection, in alphabetical order, by album title, because …. well, why not? It’s no more or less stupid than the general premise of this project. Nearly 20,000 tracks over nearly 2000 albums. It will be fun to remind myself of all the songs I know and love, and rediscover the hidden gems, those albums I listened to a few times upon purchase, then promptly forgot about. This time, albums beginning with the letter A.

What I Liked:

Neil Young – After The Goldrush

One of my all time favourite artists, Neil Young is going to crop up a lot during the course of this project I suspect. After The Goldrush is up there with his very finest albums, the first side in particular close to perfection. I vividly remember putting it on the first time, immediately hooked by the opening bars of ‘Tell Me Why’. I also remember the realisation that this was where so may of the other bands I loved got their sounds from. If you’ve never really listened to Neil Young, this album is a perfect place to start

Nearly 20,000 tracks over nearly 2000 albums. To begin, albums beginning with punctuation.

What I Liked:

Jeffrey Lewis – 12 Crass Songs, remains the finest example of a covers album I have ever heard, taking the angry punk songs of a band I knew next to nothing about, and turning them into joyous (although still angry) anti-folk ballads.

Sigur Ros – ()

It remains a stupidly named album, and they remain a vastly overplayed band, but I enjoyed this album more than I had imagined I would, considering how long it had been since I listened to it.

What is the Wowbagger Music Project?

One day, a little while ago, I was thinking about all the music I have yet to explore. Bands with back catalogues waiting to be explored. Genres I had barely touched upon. Entire countries whose music I had never heard. So I decided to do something about it. And being an accountant with a slightly obsessive personality, I decided to make a list of them all (currently over 800 strong), listen to them all, and write about them all.

I’ve named this the Wowbagger music project after Bowerick Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged, a character from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy. An immortal being who runs out of things to do, he decides to insult every creature in the known universe, just to have a purpose, even if not a very good one.

His task is clearly impossible due to the number of creatures being born and dying all the time, and my project will also never be completed, as there will always be more music I want to hear. Still it’s no more pointless than anything else, and I think I’ll enjoy it, so here we go!
